Teachers need an abundance of classroom management strategies to choose from! Having a variety of positive classroom management strategies will help you adapt to your students throughout the school year.
Classroom Management Strategy Lessons
One of the many lessons I’ve learned since becoming a teacher is that buying “prizes” for my students becomes costly. On top of that, I have found that most students prefer special privileges and experiences over extrinsic rewards and incentives. Students are more likely to enjoy school with fun daily opportunities and routines rather than to earn “things.” Most just want to feel special and simply put, have fun. After all, they are kids! But teachers want students to learn. After all, that’s what we strive for!
Each class is different every school year so I need to make sure I have a plethora of positive classroom management strategies available. Some years, I have student behavior problems or excessive talking, while other years, students need inspiration to complete their work! Likewise, one year they may want to earn a lot of privileges and then the next year they prefer being recognized for good student behavior or exceptional work.
As teachers, we want to see our students motivated to learn while having a positive classroom environment. It’s important to get to know your students each year. Understanding their interests and identities is crucial when developing relationships with your students. Once you know what works, then you can run with the reward system that works best for that group of learners to achieve their highest level of engagement.
Classroom Management Strategies Ideas
Many ideas can be used in the classroom for positive classroom management strategies. Coupons can be used with a behavior clip system, classroom economy, Dojo, and many other systems. Often, I usually make the reward coupons good for one day. In special circumstances or for certain privileges, I will make this classroom management strategy for the week. This was explained when I first reviewed the reward system. If one classroom management strategy doesn’t work, after you’ve given it enough time, try another one. Reward coupons are meant to be tweaked throughout the school year.
Then there are birthday and moving away cards as a way to make a child feel special. Brag bracelets provide a fast and easy form of positive reinforcement for students’ behavior and academic effort in school. This immediate award is a positive boost reminding students of their worth. Behavior clip charts are a fantastic way to positively promote and manage student behavior in the classroom. The behavior chart can be used to help reinforce positive behavior with your students. A classroom economy system will help students take ownership of the classroom.
A Whole Class Positive Classroom Management Strategy
Another idea is setting a goal for your entire class as a positive classroom management strategy. Once students reach that goal, they get a reward. For example, if your class is noisy in the hallway, set a class goal to earn a prize where they ALL have to work together to earn the reward. One year, we set a class goal of receiving compliments from other teachers or staff members in the hallway. Every time we received a compliment, I would add a letter from “Compliments” to the board. Once all the letters were on the board, they earned a class reward.
